What Drapery Hardware Do I Need for My Custom Drapes
When customizing your new drapery, polished style lies in the details. After you’ve chosen your drapery fabric, look next to finalize your choices on drapery hardware, as these choices will greatly affect the final look of your window treatments. To ensure your style is complementary, the Don’s Drapery Service team is looking at style options for the five most common types of drapery hardware: rods, finials, rings, brackets, and pullbacks.
Drapery Rod
Starting at the top of your drapery, we have the drapery rod, the core element of drapery hardware, without which your drapery would have nothing to hang from. Rods or drapery poles can be divided into four groups that suit different installation needs and style preferences: decorative rods, tension rods, traverse curtain rods, concealed curtain rods, or motorized rods.
The key for drapery rods is finding the right balance for your household between the functional application of drapery rods and the style features that best suit your décor.
Drapery Finials
Finials are the end caps on a drapery rod that serve two primary functions. First, they ensure the drapery rings don’t fall off the end of the rod, and second, they add a unique touch of personal style to the overall window treatment.
Finials can be made of numerous materials, including metal, wood, or glass, and are fashioned in a wide variety of shapes and styles, from minimalistic cannonball finials to ornate pinecone finials to ethereal crystal-fluted orbs. There’s seemingly no limit to the styles you can find, so invest time shopping around for just the right one.
Drapery Rings
For an elevated look, hang your custom drapery from the rod with drapery rings. Drapery rings come in a variety of colors and materials, making it easy to coordinate the drapery hardware with the rest of the window treatment. Rings need to coordinate with the rod not only in style but also in size to ensure the easy movement of your drapery. We suggest keeping the ring size to half an inch larger than the rod itself for smooth movement.
Wall Brackets
Holding up the curtain rod are wall brackets, a type of drapery hardware also sometimes referred to as supports. These are functionally necessary pieces of drapery hardware, but that doesn’t mean they can’t also support the overall aesthetic of the window treatment.
Brackets come in numerous wood, metal, plastic, and wrought iron colors. One of our favorite options for wall supports is the double rod bracket, which lets you create layered window fashions. The number of brackets you’ll need for your custom drapes is based on their weight and width.
Pullbacks
Keeping your custom drapery tamed while open are drapery holdbacks or pullbacks. Their primary purpose is to keep drapery drawn in a neat manner, but that doesn’t lessen their aesthetic influence. California homeowners will find pullbacks made of anything ranging from metal to wood to fabric for a style tailored to individual tastes from soft sophistication to modern industrial.
